And Happy New Year!
Labor Day, my internal New Year, was very special.
And not exactly what I expected.
This September marks the first in 16 years to not have carpool bookend my days. I first fantasized about this when my son went to pre-school and I would lie in bed calculating how many years it would be when he would drive himself to school and just how much longer I could safely snooze.
It happened soon enough.
In late August, after a summer jam packed with preparations, trips, and general memory making,
I dropped my youngest at college in Michigan. Predictably, once we arrived in her dorm I could feel myself begin to physically implode with flu like symptoms which kept me preoccupied. While other parents are crying during Freshman Convocation, all I could think about was getting back to my hotel room. This is just how I roll. Even good things are stressful.
(Note: in any crisis you want me in your corner because I don’t collapse until after the fact!)
So far, so normal.
And then it wasn’t.
That minor twingey feeling at the base of my spine roared the day after the long Labor Day weekend into a full blown and debilitating case of sciatica.
How bad was it, you ask? Try all seven seasons of “The Closer” viewed from a yoga mat. (Particularly poignant was the episode where Fritz throws out his back and spends the episode on the floor… life imitating art?)
I’m happy to report that two weeks later I’m working and have resumed normal studio hours.
I’m stretching daily and Pilates has become a non-negotiable for me. I’m still enjoying my semi-empty nest. There are those odd moments when I realize she won’t be waltzing through the door with stories of her day. And my son’s work / travel schedule is enviable!
Change is in the air.
(Now if it were just cooler air…)
